At two years of age, kids begin to assert their independence. When they are not able to do or communicate what they want, they end up having temper tantrums. Tantrums may range from whining, crying, screaming, pounding the floor or even breath-holding. Thus the term the terrible twos.
So how can parents handle these temper tantrums?
Giving in to a demanding child is not the solution. This will solve the problem immediately but this will just lead to more episodes of tantrums since the child will realize that having a fit is the way to get what he wants.
When first confronted with a distraught child, the parents should try to calm and soothe the child. But if he remains defiant, the parents should ignore him. They should leave the child and give him some space but at the same time, observe him quietly without him knowing it just in case he might hurt himself.
Parents should learn to be patient. During a tantrum, they should not yell at the child nor spank the him.
When in a public place such as the mall or restaurant , it would be better to leave the place first and go to a less crowded place until the child is pacified.
When the child realizes that his requests are not granted whenever he has a fit, these tantrums will eventually subside.
Ngayon pa lang marunong ng magtantrums si baby. She'll be turning one come this September.
ReplyDeleteHay naku! Actually my nephew is ganyan rin. I noticed recently that my nephew has become more assertive. He has learned to point what he wants. He would stomp his feet and cry when he doesn't get it. AND my sister-in-law would always give in. I always tease her that he'll become spoiled eventually.

my daughter also has her tantrums! talagang terrible twos! haay! ako talagang ini-ignore ko lang, pero minsan ung hubby ko pinagbibigyan, kaya tuloy spoiled sa daddy.
