All About Teething

My nephew's first tooth erupted when he was about 9 to 10 months old. I used to tease his parents that his teething was delayed already but of course I didn't worry that much because teething in infants differ. Some appear as early as three months but the usual tooth eruption starts at seven months old. It can be delayed up to 1 year old.

Some of the signs and symptoms noted during teething are the following:

1. Drooling
2. Chin or Face Rash - The skin is irritated due to the constant contact with saliva. To prevent this, always have a bib or clean cloth on hand to wipe the saliva off the skin.
3. Constant biting or chewing - You may notice that your baby tends to bite, chew or rub his gums into anything he can get his hands on. This is to relieve him of the pain he is experiencing. What you can do is that you can give him teethers or a clean cloth with an ice cube wrapped in it to soothe him. Teething gels prescribed by your pedia can also be applied to the gums.
4. Irritability - Teething leads to inflammed gums which cause the pain.
5. Poor appetite - You can offer him something cold to eat or drink like chilled applesauce, pureed banana etc.
5. Low-grade fever and diarrhea - Although there's no scientific basis for these symptoms, there are incidences of fever and loose stools during teething. Just to be on the safe side, it is better to consult your pedia if the fever and diarrhea persists for more than 3 days.

  1. My baby's already 9 months and she's not still teething. She has been showing some of those teething symptoms (Drooling and Constant biting or chewing) since she was 4 months old though. :-(
