Diaper rashes or Nappy rashes are red patches, blisters, weeping red sores found on the buttocks, genitals, groins and thighs. If untreated, these may lead to secondary bacterial or fungal infection, urinary tract infection or eczema.
Common causes of diaper rashes are:
1. prolonged contact with urine (wet diaper)
2. prolonged contact with stool
3. soap was not thoroughly rinsed off the baby after bathing
4. irritation on inner lining of the diaper
Treatment:
1. change diapers frequently
2. always clean the diaper area with water and mild soap and use disposable non-perfumed tissue paper for drying it
3. apply a "barrier" cream every diaper change
4. leave the genital area exposed as long as possible
5. use quality diapers that can keep baby's bottom dry
