Best Water for Your Baby

Babies are susceptible to water-borne diseases like diarrhea caused by rotavirus, e. coli and amoeba, hepatitis A infection, cholera, typhoid and many others. Babies less than 12 months are most susceptible to these infections so good hygiene and proper preparation of milk should be observed.

It is important that what you give to your child is free from contaminants. Breastfeeding mothers have an edge because breast milk is safe and clean. The problem arises if the child is bottle-fed. Mothers should make sure that the milk bottles are properly sterilized. They also have to make sure that the boiled water used in milk feeding is not contaminated when you cool and transfer it from one container to the other.

Sterilized bottled water like Dr Edwards is the recommended water for babies. Mothers these days usually use bottled water like spring, mineral or distilled but these kinds of water is not sterile yet. You still have to boil and cool it prior to infant use.

For 6 months and below, you have to use the Dr Edwards with the white cap.

For 6 months to 3 years, the one with the blue cap (Dr Edwards Fouride Plus) should be used since it contains flouride.

Flouride strengthens the tooth enamel making the teeth more resistant to decay. The recommended flouride ion level in drinking water from 6 months to 3 years old is 0.3 to 0.6 ppm. Dr Edwards Flouride Plus has a flouride ion level of 0.3 ppm while bottled distilled water has zero. In older kids, flouride varnishing is recommended but in infants, flouridated water is ideal.
